Welcome.

I am Professor for Empirical Social Science Methods with a Focus on Text Analysis at the Department of Communication, Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Vienna. Together with Prof. Annie Waldherr I am leading the Computational Communication Science Lab (CCL) since 2017. I am also Chair of the Board of Directors of the European Research Infrastructure Monitoring Electoral Democracy (MEDem). From 2018 to 2024 I served as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Before joining Vienna, I have worked as Associate Professor for Political Communication at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research and the Department of Communication at the University of Amsterdam. My research focusses on various aspects of computational communication science, often with a substantial focus on political communication. Mostly I study (social) media portrayals of politics and media effects on political engagement, attitudes or behaviours, and contribute to methodological advances of content analysis techniques. I have co-authored more than 150 international journal articles and numerous book chapters on computational communication science approaches, and on issues such as media and European integration, media election campaign and issue coverage, media effects on immigration attitudes and extreme-right voting, the role of modality in media effects, among others.
